The origin of Brighton and Hove calendar

Updated: Oct 17, 2020

It all started 20 years ago when a local photographer Nigel Swallow wanted to create a community project which would connect local people and support local artists at same time.

Nigel has been photographing in and around Brighton since 1989. He founded The North Laine Photography Gallery with the aim to support local photographers. The ethos behind the gallery was to represent diverse interpretations of what living in Brighton means to to different people.

He helped a lot of local photographers to be introduced to larger audience by regularly running competitions and staging exhibitions. The best thing about Nigel is that he`s not driven by profit but by a passion to change things for better. He started producing Brighton and Hove calendar in 2000 in order to to support local emerging talent in his gallery. The calendar has proven to be very popular reaching up to 16 000 copies sold annually.
