1. Can you tell us a bit about City Books and how it all started? How long have you been part of Brighton’s book-loving scene?
Inge and I started City Books in 1986. Wham were heading to the top of the pop charts. It had been a remainder bookshop- selling end of line titles and before that a greengrocers. On our first day an elderly man said that we wouldn't last 6 weeks. We are still here and thriving.
2. What makes an indie bookshop like yours special?
We have been booksellers for over 90 years between Inge and Paul alone. We listen to customers and are keen to stock books that interest and entertain them. We have strong connections with publishers and all enjoy our job.
All of us read and are enthusiastic about recommending both favourites and books that fit customer's needs. This is not always the same in every bookshop.
3. You’ve been stocking the calendar for years now – thank you! What do your customers like about it?
People love the Brighton Calendar. Its publication is the most anticipated event of the year. It has wonderful vibe and is popular with locals, newcomers, as well as as old Brightonians and Hovarians. It is pleasure to sell such an iconic locally produced gem.
4. What kinds of books and gifts are you most excited about at the moment
We are excited to be selling Brighton University alumna Emily Gravett's beautiful book 'Bear's Nap' signed by her and with a free print. This comes out in September. We are taking pre orders. She is one of the best children's authors and illustrators.

5. What’s your favourite part of being an indie shop in Brighton & Hove?
Paul, a Brighton native, firmly believes this is one of the best places to live - fullFind out a stop. Inge, who grew up in London, moved to Sussex as a child. 'We both agree that with our lovely, intelligent, and interesting customers, there's no better place to run our bookshop.
6. Any memorable moments in the shop?
We have met some wonderful authors, both at our events and as customers in the shop. Wouldn't like to pick out any individuals, but over the years we have had the pleasure of introducing hundreds of brilliant authors. We are the official booksellers at Charleston Festival, which is fantastically well curated and is guaranteed to dazzle.
